What is to be done with this guy. I would like to hear what the Fans of the Raiders think the course of action should be for him. I would prefer to leave Al Davis out of this conversation please. Just what needs to be done with Jamarcus.
Here is what I think needs to happen. I think the 09 season will be accompied by a top 5-7 10' draft pick. I would likepressure be put squarely on Russells shoulders. By that I mean no longer baby him with 18 pass attempts. Make him play in a balanced offenesive game plan. Make him show me, you, Cable or the next coach what he is capable, or currently incapable of.
If he continues to fail misearble, then that top 5-7 becomes a top 1-3 pick. Then it may be time to see about picking a another QB, or trading out to get more depth.
If he shows a level of improvment then start the 2010 camp as the starter, but bring in a level of compietion that makes him uncomfortable. That would require some tricky maneuvering. Names that come to mind are Chad Pennington or Tavaris Jackson, maybe Jason Campbell.
Either way he is going to be on the roster next year. It is really importatant to me that he is given every oppurtunity to not only Succeed, but also he be given the oppurtunity to bury himself, which he is doing a great job at.
Please, lets start a discussion that actually brings a thought to what it is you want to see happen. If you want him benched then great, is there a course off action you want to see followed after the benching.

I for one wanted Russell over Quinn and others in 2007. Boy was I wrong. I guess that's why I'm sitting here typing instead of in Alameda. Even Ray Charles can see that the effort isn't there but I'm questioning his reasoning too after yesterday. I can come to grips with firing a pass into triple coverage but this fool was FLOATING passes into triple coverage!! I mean, seriously!
I may be wrong but I believe somewhere in the contract there HAS to be a clause related to performance. The reason I say this is b/c even though he has guaranteed money, there has to be a 'but if' statement in there. Just the fact that he has missed meetings and been fined should be enough to start peeling that onion.
The reason for that last paragraph brings me to the answer to your questions. Cut our losses and send his meely mouth [bleep] back home to AlaBAMA.

Thank you for your post. Do you have a direction that you would like to see the team go in after cutting him?

Give me one stud receiver, someone like an Anquan Boldin that can loosen the opposing defense. After that a slot or offside receiver that is talented enough to take away the double team away from Boldin, a possession receiver if you will. After that, squat down on a Tier II QB that is good enough to start but can't see the field b/c of playing behind a high draft pick, get him a decent offensive coordinator and let's see what gives.
I can dream, can't I?;-)

I say give this guy who is so luxuriously living in a fraternatity of 32 highly paid men the opportunity to sink or swim, force him into high intensity workouts, dropping to 255 lbs, work for 120 days with one of the nations top tier QB coaches in mechanics and accuracy drills, improve his football IQ. I would also bring in if possible a Chad Pennington, Chad Henne or Alex Smith (contract expiring) to compete with Jamarcus, and intentionally leaving him benched, similar to Vince Young, agitating him enough to force him into an aggressive life saving maturity. If this works, stay with him, if not then here is my Plan B: After the 2010 season, I would, in lieu of the enormous investments AD has made in players not currently on the roster, I would go for the throat and secure Drew Brees. In the meanwhile, I would build the O-line up, replace our middle Linebacker with a real run stuffing deamon, improve our secondary, try and find another shut down corner and look for another dominating superman type DT. This would, if I was creating a stratedgy for long term success, what I would do.

Floaters are never good, however Murphy could have went up and got that ball or at least try to knock it away. Murphy just waited for it to come to him. So it`s still a team effort, no matter who makes the first mistake.

I think a lot of us wanted him benched,(me included) but now there really isn't a point to it. Like you said, have him prove his worth. Its hard enough to have one rookie WR out there, but having two really hinders the offense. Murphy shows signs of brillance and gives you hope that could could be a bright spot on the offense in the future, but he makes stupid mistakes and he has trouble watching the ball into his hands. No comment on Bey. If we get Schilens back, it should help Russell and the whole offense.
If we draft in the top 3-5 I don't see us taking a QB at all. We have to much money tied up with Russell. I also dont see us trading back, (which is what I think we should do) only because I dont' know that Al could resist the temptation to take another big name athlete. If we stay in position we should go DT or OT in the first round or two, but knowing us we will probably draft Taylor Mays ha ha. We should be able to pick up a decent QB in the later rounds, maybe someone like Tony Pike in the 4th. We just need to press Russell to see if he is legit.
I think Russell should have to earn his starting spot and to start TC there will be a REAL QB competition. Thats how guys get better. Russell doesn't seem to care how he practices because come Sunday the job is his no matter if he gets out played. I want the best QB on the field and just because he isn't the best QB now doesn't mean he can't/won't get there.

Tony, JaMarcus worries me as a QB. However he certainly does not have a supporting cast of linemen or receivers. Only Raider personnel folks know if JaMarcus can and will succeed. But give him a fair deal and give him some support.

But FLOATING passes into triple coverages worries me more than having an O line or receivers.

Favre used to do that crap also for his first 4-5 years in the league. That can be fixed, I`m not sure if the easy fumbling can be though. He barely gets hit and the ball drops out.

That ball does pop out easy, and he also seems to throw some wounded ducks to. Like it is just coming out of his hand wrong. Culpepper used to fumble alot, but I believe that was because he had small hands for a big guy. I wonder if JRuss might need to readjust the way he gris the ball. it may be something as simple as that... or he may just suck. I really don't know

Besides JaMarcus, why is the Oakland media all over Cable? They obviously don't like him, but man, enough is enough. The players on the current roster are not his selections, except for some of the linemen. The win loss records has much to do with talent, something in short supply on this team.

I say cut Russell at the end of the season, just dump him, you can't trade him, no one wants that contract, especially connected to a QB with no skill set!!! So I say cut him, I would interview new coordinators, too, offensive and defensive, even though the defensive coordinator, is kind of starting to make some good moves, still put him on alert!! DO NOT!!! draft a QB!!! Unless you are in a position to draft Tim Tebow!!! Bottom line, that's the only kid I see turning Oakland's passing game around, or pick up a veteran QB with a strong arm, accurracy, and knowledge of the game, he needs to be a serious guy, no more K. Collins type idiots!! And go to the draft and free agency for O-line men, and LB's maybe 1 serious veteran possession WR to school the young WR's we have on routes, and bumping a DB when you're running a route, how to get to the 1st down marker and stop for the 1st down! just to pick up 10 yards, how to block, how to help open lanes for the running game, just school the youngsters on the team! I like Cable, he has the right mindset, but he is coaching with all the cards stacked against him, Al should give him more time, because we can win if we make these changes, in my book, at least this is the route i would go, it would improve the offense and the defense!!

The way this o-line has become due to injuries, I`m sure peyton manning could not do much better. The one thing that has allways bothered me about Jamrcus is he fumbles to easily. Just like Culpepper used to do. I feel like that will be the only grey cloud over his head.

I am not here to rip on Ja-Marcus Russell, although in my mind he is washed up as a quarterback, and was so much earlier than the 2009-10 season.
He is my thinking. I want to know how many people really know football. Ja-Marcus Russell is 6'6" and weighs ~280lbs, but has oustanding athleticism.
For the sake of argument let's say his arm is shot, and he will never be able to quarterback.
What football position would you transfer Ja-Marcus Russell's skill set if you were interested in getting value for the $30m the Raiders still owe him on his contract? Would it be the offensive side or defensive side of the ball? Would it be a lineman OT or DE, or perhaps a line backer? Growing up in the world of football he must have played other positions than QB.
I'll make it even simpler, what would Ja-Marcus Russells second best position on the football field be? I am not interested in insults, but some what well thought out responses.
Thanks.

If there was still a wedge of course. I have no idea if he has the hands, but I think TE is the obvious choice. Or give him a in n out gift card and move him to OT.

There is no switching Russell to another position!!! I'll tell you why, HE IS AN IDIOT!!! Not issuing insults, just telling the real! If you switch Russell to another position, Oakland will get the same kind of play from him, or worse, 1. He will feel he has been demoted, and that he has always played the QB position! 2. He has no work ethic, all we need is an out of shape offensive, or defensive player, that refuses to see this as another opportunity to continue in the NFL!!! 3. He will be poison in the locker room, the last thing we need is new players following the lead of a kid who couldn't realise he had the world by the balls and refused to capitalize on it!!! I think benching him is the right call, should have made this call 4 weeks ago, but never the less, we get a chance to see if we can move the ball with another starter, if we can motivate the team, with a new QB, if we can win with a journeyman like we did with Gannon!! WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOSE???

IN 2011 WE HAVE NO 1ST RND PICK. I WOULD GO AFTER JIMMY CLAUSEN IN NEXT YEARS DRAFT, SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO JR. DEVELOP CLAUSEN PROPERLY UNDER WHAT I HOPE WILL BE A BETTER MANAGED TEAM AND SET OF COACHES HIRED HIRED UNDER A NEW GM STRUCTURE PUT TOGETHER FOR A LONG HAUL. JAMARCUS WILL HAVE TO BE BETTER THEN CLAUSEN, HOWEVER I REALLY DON'T SEE JAMARCUS BEING BETTER THEN THE KID FROM NOTRE DAME, EVER!!!

First off he needs a personal trainer to lose some weight and tone up, if he doesn't want to do it that shows he doesn't have the dedication and you can stop right there.
Assuming he does the personal training, you then would compare tapes of hin now, in high school and college and compare his mechanics like they do in baseball for pitchers
Now that he's gotten his mobility back from taking the weight off and corrected his mechanics, he would need to spend the entire offseason with Schillens, Murphy, Bey, Higgins and Mller developing chemistry
If all of this were to happen, you would either have a guy who looks like the #1 overall or the second coming of Ryan Leaf

Before he gets to that point, he needs a trainer to shape him up between the ears!!
I'm not buying the ' I don't show emotion' BS he's been spewing and he definitely hasn't been endearing himself to players or fans with his performances. Back when he was drafted, a lot on this board skewered the pick. I came out and said that some of the comments stemmed from racism. I was wrong, as wrong as I could be. I thought if he could be a star at LSU, he could do good, if not great things for Oakland. Well, given the history of LSU, Les Miles and Nick Saban, JR was just a piece of meat and now our worst fears have come to fruition.
Russell, cashed in on a few good games in the national spotlight while in college, got paid with a guaranteed contract, and is laughing all the way to the check cashing place (sarcasm)
IMO, he's not done as a NFL QB b/c he never WAS an NFL QB. I would even go so far as to say he is the Marcus Dupree of this generation.

he has chemistry with Shillens, Miller and higgins. It`s the other 2 and a healthy o-line is what is much needed.

It amazes me that it took this long for Russell to actually stay after practice and continue to throw. I can't believe that it took him getting demoted to actually light a fire under him. If he really is motivated to stay in the league and he actually received the message from getting benched, he should come back next season in better shape. Hopefully he will also continue to host a passing camp that more of our WRs will attend.
I don't think he is a lost cause, I still think he could turn things around he just has to want to. I thought from the very begining that he wasn't ready to be a NFL QB and he isn't, but he was handed the team anyway. Sit him the rest of the year and see if he comes back serious next year. I just hope we don't waste another first rounder on a QB.
